I agree. I currently teach in a Baltimore County elementary school that houses approximately 600 students. Because we have enough classrooms and teachers to go with this population, it does not feel like a large school. I believe that the additions need to be done correctly...classes still need to be small, and the building still needs to be appropriate and navigable for younger children.

My initial reaction to the thought of additions to the existing schools was "what a bad idea". But, after taking some time to think about it, this could be great. As with any expansion project, it can be done well or it can be a real mess. Careful consideration must be given to the design. Many private schools have expanded and made additions over the years, with tremendous success. And, the number of students at Stoneleigh and Hampton will continue to increase over the years. I don't think a new school at the Ruxton site will totally alleviate the over crowding problems/increased enrollment that is likely to occur over the next 10-20 years. An addition is certainly better than all those trailers!

Good to see that things continue to move in a forward direction. Renderings do put things in perspective… I hope that the design is in line with the budget.

Any news on when the first draft of the rezoning map will be released? I know many neighbors are eager to know which school their child will be attending in the fall of 2010. Please keep the group posted.

The 451 number doesn't even include families who want to send their kids to public schools, but won't under these conditions. My husband and I chose to live in Rodgers Forge because of the great schools, but until at least 2010 we are paying for private schools. Thanks for nothing Jim Smith.

What an excellent post! I couldn't agree more with your assessment of Dr. Hairston. He has tried to shift the blame to Jim Smith, to principals, to teachers, and to curriculum staff. When do we all stand up and say, "wait a minute...you're in charge. You make the final decisions. You hired the Principals. You purchased the programs. You agreed to the addition on Ridge Ruxton. You didn't ask for a raise for teachers. You are ultimately responsible for all things good and bad in Baltimore County Public Schools." It's time we all stand together to hold our rock star superinendent accountable. I look forward to seeing how well he scores at the next BOE meeting.

The BBJ article is so true.

The ONLY reason to pay the prices that we do for houses in these areas is due to the schools. Otherwise, I'd move to Lauraville and get twice the house for the same price.

Schools are THE ONLY factor driving prices in these Baltimore County neighborhoods- Jim Smith needs to wake the hell up and realize this.
